NIHB COVERAGE

What is NIHB?

Indigenous Services Canada’s (ISC) Non-Insured Health Benefits program (NIHB) is a national program that provides eligible First Nations and Inuit clients, residing in Canada, with coverage for a range of medically necessary health benefits when these benefits are not otherwise covered through private or provincial or territorial health insurance plans or social programs. This includes coverage for mental health services.

Every calendar year, an eligible client can receive up to 22 hours of counselling performed by an eligible provider on a fee-for-service basis, such as, individual or group counselling. Additional hours in the same calendar year may be provided on a case-by-case basis.

Who is eligible NIHB coverage?

You’re eligible if you’re a resident of Canada and meet any of the following criteria

  • A registered First Nations person (“status Indian” under the Indian Act)

  • A recognized Inuk under a land-claims agreement

  • A child under age 2 whose parent is eligible (not applicable at our clinic)

What does the application process look like to receive NIHB coverage?

Thrive Teen Therapy provides virtual services covered through the NIHB program for eligible clients located anywhere in Alberta. This means that once we have confirmed your eligibility, we will bill the full cost of the attended counselling sessions directly through the NIHB program at no out-of-pocket cost to you. Please contact us at clientservices@thriveteens.ca for more information or questions about the NIHB program.

Who can provide these services FOR NIHB CLIENTS at our clinic?
