Registered PRovisional Psychologist
TEEN & young adult COUNSELLING
Hi there! My name is Sam and I’m a Registered Provisional Psychologist with a Master’s degree from the University of Lethbridge.
I was 15 when I first went through a really difficult time in my life and saw a therapist. She was amazing and completely changed how I see the world and myself. From that point on, I knew that I wanted to enter the helping profession and do the same thing that she did. In working with young people at Thrive, I aim to provide the same quality of support that I got when I was a teenager.
When we’re working together, I want you to feel safe, like you can trust me, and (most importantly) that I will never judge you. My approach is warm and down to earth. Rather than giving you lectures or acting like I’m the expert on your life, I’ll get curious about what life is like for you so that together we can figure out what’s going on.
I work with teens experiencing anxiety, depression, anger, trauma, grief, suicidal thoughts, challenges with technology usage, and major life transitions. I also really enjoy helping young people figure out who they are, what matters to them, and where they want their lives to go.
I draw a lot from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), which is about understanding your experiences and emotions, learning how to handle the difficult stuff that shows up in life, and figuring out the kind of person you want to be. Therapy isn’t about turning you into someone else, but helping you build a life that feels more like your own.
I know it can be really scary to talk to someone you’ve never met and be vulnerable. I’ll meet you where you’re at, whether you use humour, talk openly about your emotions, keep things matter-of-fact, or need some time before opening up. There’s no “right” way to talk to a therapist.
Outside of work, I love spending time with my family, meditating, reading, learning, and playing games.
Sam
