Hi! I am Kirstin.
I am a mom, pet lover and Social Worker who was born and raised in rural Alberta. I have attained my master’s in clinical social work, which means when doing therapy with individuals I also take into consideration all the different influences and systems in their lives (family, school, friendships, community, etc.). This can be powerful because we are shaped by the influences and people around us so it can help me, and you gain a better understanding of who you are now and where you would like to go in your mental health journey.
I am very passionate about mental health and ending the stigma around it. I have ten years experience working in junior/senior high schools in a mental health capacity. Sharing your mental health journey with someone can make you feel vulnerable, and I am honored to have the chance to work with youth and hear their story.
Areas I work with are anxiety (generalized anxiety, panic attacks, social anxiety), self harm/suicidal ideation, emotional regulation (anger management, dealing with big feelings), as well as trauma and family turmoil.
My approach to counselling is trauma informed care, so I believe YOU the client are in the driver’s seat, and my goal is to create a comfortable, brave space. I like to incorporate games, creativity and art to make it a positive, relaxing experience. I use trauma informed care, mindfulness, systems theory, cognitive behavioural therapies and strength-based approaches when counselling.
In my spare time, I love listening to music of many different genres and going to live concerts, game nights with friends and relaxing with my fur babies (two cats and a dog). I grew up on a farm and have lived in rural communities most of my life, so I am also aware of the challenges and blessings associated with rural living. If you feel like you can relate to any of this, I would love to chat.
